September 26, 2012 – New feet
Wounded Warrior Monte Bernardo’s newly found feet. It was strange that we never took the time to take the shoes or socks off of his prosthetic legs. Then one day we were strolling around Walter Reed and saw another wounded warrior with flip flops on! These things have toes and everything, who knew? At least they don’t stink.

He is now officially taller than his sisters and feels like the big brother again. He has been diligently practicing on them every day. We are so proud of his awesome progress!

September 6, 2012 – Walking in public
Another big milestone: this weekend, Monte walked in public on his prosthetic legs for the first time! Monte faced the challenge with determination and tenacity, and he walked all the way through Nordstrom and through one entire wing of the mall. He combined PT and OT in one brave and tough 20-minute walk. He had plenty of support from some of his family members who got to witness this awesome moment. We are so proud of you Monte!
September 5, 2012 – Chef Monte
Monte was allowed to take his legs out of MATC this weekend and took full advantage of having them at home. Here’s to you, your daily progress and awesome apple cinnamon bacon!

August 20, 2012 – First steps!!
There is only one thing that can trump Monte’s new hand and that is his FIRST STEPS!!! We are so PROUD of Monte! 47 days ago his last step was one of destruction and misery. 47 days later his first step is one of new beginnings and celebration. The Taliban cannot destroy his spirit and tenacity, they only made him stronger. We are humbled and inspired by his can do attitude and spirit. He is not only our hero but he is one of the hardest working people we have ever met. CONGRATULATIONS TO MONTE!!!!
August 19, 2012 – New hand!
HUGE MILESTONE! Monte just got his new hand!!!! He has spent the weekend practicing how to use it. August 12, 2012 – Box of coins
A box of well deserved coins. They come from different services and commands. Each is unique and holds a certain level of importance to Monte. He looks at them often and reflects on the person who gave it to him and what they said during that presentation. Monte was able to sleep well this weekend after a hard week of phantom pains. This is great because he is now well rested for the Tim McGraw and Kenny Chesney concert tonight! More pics to follow.
August 10, 2012 – Thank you, Morgan Lewis!

August 2, 2012 – Marathon dedication
August 1, 2012 – Four weeks
Four weeks ago, the Taliban tried to take Monte’s life. Four weeks ago, Monte lost both legs and a hand. Four weeks ago, Monte was born again. Four weeks is a short time in most people lives. In Monte’s last four weeks he was in a coma for one, in ICU for the second. The third week was spent on the Wounded Warrior floor and the fourth he has flourished in outpatient therapy. Monte is busting recovery records and taking names. In Monte’s own words “the Taliban can’t phase me, they can try, but here I come rising from the of ashes of their little bomb, 3 outta 4 limbs, less than I had and still as strong as ever, bring it…….”. The Taliban thought they could break the spirit of an American Warrior, but the opposite has happened. They have created a survivor, an inspiration, a grateful father and a caring brother, a stronger soul and an even harder Cav Scout than they faced the first time. I am glad to say that four weeks later Monte is on his first pass from the hospital with his family, enjoying a wonderful day on a boat cruising from Annapolis to St Michaels. Keep up the hard work Warrior and stay strong! Special thanks to Tamara Darvish and DARCARS Automotive Group for helping to make this day so special for Monte.

July 26, 2012 – Lit
The band Lit came and visited Monte at PT! Such an awesome band touring w/ the USO. He really enjoyed them and he said that they were cool guys. BTW, Monte can now have visitors, so let us know if you were wanting to come by the hospital. Also, a request has been sent for no more care packages. He has a ton of food in his hospital room and is running out of space! If you have one ready to send, no prob, just going forward we would like for folks that want to assist, to help w/ fundraising or make a donation to Bernardo Recovery Fund. Thanks for the support y’all!

Thank you Semper Fi Fund for Monte’s new iPad! He is very happy and it makes it much easier for him to stay in touch. It will be challenging and terribly painful, but we have no doubt that he will excel and be successful in his new endeavor. Thank you all for the continued support and prayers from everyone. July 13, 2012 – Amazing strength
Update: I have a quote from Monte in response to someone asking how he was feeling; “Alive and kicking, the Taliban can’t phase me, they can try, but here I come rising from the of ashes of their little bomb, 3 outta 4 limbs, less than I had and still as strong as ever, bring it…….”. This response sums up his can do attitude, tenacity, and warrior spirit! We are so proud of him. Your prayers and support have made him strong.
July 12, 2012 – Road to recovery
Monte had a pretty rough day yesterday. He was in a lot of pain and did not sleep well the night before. The drugs caused very vivid dreams, which is not a good thing. Thankfully, today has gone much better and Monte was very excited to eat his first meal since the explosion. He is still in the ICU, but the doctors are looking to move him to the Wounded Warrior floor either today or tomorrow. All of his sisters will be here this weekend to visit ,and he is looking forward to that. Please continue to pray for his recovery!
